You do! As the couple, you’re responsible for applying for your marriage license through your local municipal office or the Maine State Registrar, depending on your place of residence. Once you have your license in hand, just bring it with you to the ceremony.
From there, I handle the rest: I’ll verify the information, complete the required sections during your ceremony, and file the license with the issuing office within seven business days. This ensures your marriage is legally registered with the State of Maine.
What to Bring When You Apply for Your Marriage License:
-
Valid photo ID – such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport
-
If previously married, a certified copy of your divorce decree or your former spouse’s death certificate (must have a raised or foil seal)
-
$40 license fee, payable to the Clerk’s Office
You can complete the application in person or get a head start by filling it out online. Once issued, your marriage license is valid for 90 days and must be used within that time frame.
After your ceremony, I’ll make sure everything is signed, sealed, and submitted—so you can focus on celebrating.
